Ethane (C6H2)Ethane is a colorless, odorless, highly flammable gas at room temperature and pressure. Also known as dimethyl and ethyl hydride methylmethane, ethane is a member of the paraffin family of hydrocarbons and is the simplest hydrocarbon with two carbon atoms. ApplicationsEthane is the largest constituent of natural gas after methane; ethane was burned as a fuel in previous decades, but it is now separated from natural gas and used industrially to create ethylene (C2H4), which is used in the production of ethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and other products. DetectionEthane has two spectral absorption bands near 800 and 3000 cm-2. The absorption coefficient peaks at 10-19 molecules-1 (cm-2)-1. The following graph describes the absorption coefficient of ethane for the spectral range 2995-3005 [cm-1] at a resolution of 0.01 [cm-1]; cell pressure: 10000 [Pa]; cell length: 10 [m]:
